Introduction to Spirituality
and Therapy Training
Saturday, Feb 23, 2008, 9:00-4:30: Cost, $75
(lunch included)
This workshop is designed for therapists who would like to integrate spirituality into their therapeutic practice from an internal systems perspective. In this workshop I will review the Parts Work model which is an integration of Internal Family Systems model of Richard Schwartz with Buddhist psychology as brought to the West by Thich Nhat Hahn. The focus of this review will be on my clinical experience where spiritual resources were a key part of the therapeutic process. We will also work with our own internal systems.
The workshop will use Parts Work and spiritual practices to help participants develop the ability to return to center, to the “Self.” This capacity is important for preventing burnout and "compassion fatigue,” as well as to enhance our ability to offer therapeutic conditions. Parts Work is an important tool because it helps us see and understand our own reactions to difficult clinical situations and to situations in our everyday life which lead to constriction and loss of energy. It supports our capacity to develop awareness of and compassion for ourselves and others. Through understanding the parts of ourselves that are activated in these situations our system is able to find balance and healing. Practices of guided imagery, meditation, Zen inspired Big Heart/Big Mind, and Dances of Universal Peace will support our work as we tune and open our hearts. Both individual renewal and increased effectiveness in helping others are the goals of this workshop.
